At the feet of the Swiss mountains on the shore of a glacial lake under the north face of the majestic Matterhorn with the sound of the clinking of bells and the roaring of a waterfall in the background. Here we sit on yoga mats and inhale the fresh mountain air deep into our lungs. Breathing out, our journey into the depths of the soul and body begins. Meditation, asanas, connecting to nature, self-awareness. Our YOGA & HIKE yoga holidays in the picturesque small mountain town of Zermatt in the Swiss Alps give you the opportunity to escape from everyday life through a unique yoga retreat in which you and the pure mountain landscape are the key components. After a morning yoga lesson and breakfast, we pack up our yoga mats and backpacks and set out to the mountains, where we find the right spot for our second yoga lesson, surrounding by the wild Alpine landscape and its 4000-metre peaks. NAMASTE. On our return, we visit one of the many cosy mountain restaurants whose high quality cuisine and professional service will impress you. You’re in for a real treat! What better way to end the day than a deserved relaxation in the hotel spa, or with a glass of something divine while watching the sun setting behind the Matterhorn?

Yoga

Yoga & Hike is not just an exercise-focused sojourn – above all it’s your holiday. Getting out of your rut, with time just for you and your thoughts, reconnecting with nature and seeking out what is most important to your inner self. Come and grant your body and mind total relaxation, and prepare for the days, years, projects to come… As such, your yoga lessons will be focused on meditation, calming your mind, breathing exercises and other yoga techniques which will help you to perceive your body and mind as a whole. Our yoga asanas will lead you to strengthen your body and relax your mind. Each lesson will last 60 minutes, and its content will be adapted to the particular day programme. In the morning, you can look forward to Sunrise vinyasa flow to stretch and warm up your body, and in the afternoon, for example, you can enjoy Flexibility vinyasa flow focused on relaxing your legs and ankles to prepare your body for another beautiful mountain trek. The following day, we focus on Sun Salutations, showing you modifications, types, styles and then we practise them together at a mountain lake with a view of the Matterhorn. Have you ever done as many Sun Salutations during one lesson as your age in years?

Our lessons are suitable for anyone: beginners, experienced and seasoned yoga enthusiasts. The maximum number of participants is 14 people.

We will be doing yoga mainly outside, and only in the event of rainy weather will we move to the unique location of an old hydroelectric power plant which provided energy for the mountain train to the Gornergrat between 1898 and 1947. Since 2014, the venue has been improved and used for various social events. It is situated just 10 minutes away from the hotel by foot.

Your teacher will be the inimitable Klára Pokorná, whom you might recognise from her lessons in Prague’s Namastery, Yoga Movement Prague or Jógovna yoga studios.

Hike

Zermatt is an exquisite place in unique wild surroundings offering breathtaking scenery best appreciated while hiking on the mountain slopes. In order to get to the right wild place for doing yoga, we’ll be taking treks on foot. All such sites will be chosen according to accessibility and position so that they can be reached along easy trails, with a total hike no longer than 12 km, including frequent use of mountain lifts or railway. The trips will be half-day or whole-day in length depending on weather and distance covered. All trips include lunch in one of the many locally renowned mountain restaurants. You can look forward to regional specialities such as rösti, fondue and raclette, or you can enjoy the modern cuisine which these restaurants, which have often won international awards, offer. Treks are always planned so that anyone fit and active can manage them.

Day 2 8:00 Morning yoga, breakfast 10:30 hike: Arvenweg trail (or by train to Riffelalp) - hiking around the lakes Grünsee (yoga session) and Moosjisee. Lunch at the renowned Chez Vrony restaurant - on foot to Zermatt (route approx. 12 km, intermediate)

Day 3 Morning yoga, breakfast 10:30 hike: By cable car to Blauherd - hiking to Fluhalp around lake Stellisee with reflection of the Matterhorn (yoga session). Lunch in the mountain restaurant Fluhalp - hiking back to Blauherd – by Flower trail to the Sunnegga - from Sunnegga to Zermatt by cable car (route approx. 9 km, easy).

Day 4 5:25 by train to Gornergrat (Sunrise yoga session) + breakfast 10:30 hike: Hiking through Rotenboden and Riffelsee to Riffelberg. Retourn to Zermatt by train from Riffelberg. (route approx. 3,5km, easy) 18:00 Evening yoga (outdoors)

Day 5 8:00 Morning yoga, breakfast FREE DAY (activities for free day)

Day 6 8:00 Morning yoga, breakfast 10:30 hike: By cable car to the Schwarzee - hiking to Stafelalp under the north wall of the Matterhorn (yoga session), lunch at the Stafelalp mountain restaurant - hiking to Zermatt or by cable car from Furri to Zermatt (route approx. 10/7 km, intermediate)

Day 7 8:00 Morning yoga, breakfast Check-out

What to bring

  • Hiking clothing, for colder and rainy weather as well. (Rainproof jacket, beanie, headband, gloves, etc.)
  • Hiking shoes
  • Backpack for spare clothing, snacks, etc. (We will be carrying our yoga mats, so the backpack with outside straps to attach it will be a good choice. If don’t have one like that, no problem. Every yoga mat will have a case with its own strap to carry it.)
  • We highly suggest you to get a travel insurance!
  • Check the Activities for the free day and decide if you need something special to bring for the activity you chose.
